Markham's secretary explains that he has recieved the Letter of the 22nd. And he will accept the $30.00, but he want s two per cent of the royalties on the first 2000 copies sold. It is discussed further. Letter is unsigned.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
